The sport utility vehicle burst into flames after being hit by another car, authorities said

TOMS RIVER -- A sport utility vehicle burst into flames on Thursday morning after it crashed with another car in Toms River, authorities said.

The crash occurred at 7:30 a.m. after a 2013 Subaru Forester driven by Caitlin Russo, 27, of Toms River, made a left turn onto Lomell Lane from Bey Lea Road, said Ralph Stocco, spokesman for the Toms River Police Department.

Stocco said Russo turned in front of a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox driven by George Delia, 59. He said the Chevrolet rapidly caught fire after the crash. Firefighters from the Pleasant Plains Fire Company eventually extinguished the blaze, he said.

Delia, whose home town was not available, was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River for a hand injury, Stocco said. Russo was taken to the same hospital for back pain, he said. A 59-year-old female passenger in the Equinox was taken to that hospital for a knee injury and potential internal injuries, Stocco said.

Russo was issued a summons for failure to yield, he said.
