Several beaches were also closed earlier in the week

While the sunny, hot conditions Thursday morning will make for good beach weather, officials are awaiting word on whether three closed Ocean County beaches that will reopen.

Samples of water collected that exceeded the water quality standard prompted Department of Environmental officials to close these three bay beaches on Wednesday.:

  • Beachwood Beach West in Beachwood
  • West Beach Avon Road in Pine Beach
  • Hancock Avenue in Seaside Heights

In addition, the DEP issued an advisory to bathers who headed to the Sheridan Avenue beach in Seaside Heights. It remained open Wednesday, but swimmers were advised that a sample of water that tested high for bacteria was collected there.  That advisory was lifted on Thursday morning, DEP spokesman Larry Hanja said.

The results of Wednesday's tests will be available later this morning and DEP officials will announce whether or not the beaches will be open to swimmers once more.

Two consecutive samples containing bad water must be collected before officials close a beach.

Other beaches around the state have also closed this week due to substandard water quality. Gunnison Beach in Sandy Hook re-opened Thursday after swimming was banned the previous day.

Cape May Beach at Pittsburgh Avenue was closed on Wednesday following a sewage spill earlier in the week, according to CBS Philadelphia. Ten other beaches were under an advisory on Wednesday.
