SHIP BOTTOM -- A man was flown to a local hospital after he injured himself while body surfing on Long Beach Island Wednesday morning.

The man, who is in his mid-70s, was body surfing near East 26th Street before 8 a.m. when he suffered an injury, said Keith Stokes, beach supervisor and lifeguard chief in Ship Bottom.

The man exited the water on his own and walked to his residence on East Ship Bottom Avenue, Stokes said. He called 911 after feeling numbness and a tingling feeling, according to Stokes.

He was then flown to the trauma center at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City.

According to local surf forecasts, wave heights on Long Beach Island are in the 1 to 2 feet range with choppy conditions.
