TOMS RIVER - A 44-year-old Monmouth County woman died Monday night after being struck by two vehicles as she attempted to cross Route 9 in Toms River, police said.

Kimberly Van Pelt, of Neptune City, was walking across Route 9 at approximately 6 p.m. when she was struck by a 2000 Dodge pickup truck that was traveling south, Toms River Police Department spokesman Ralph Stocco said in a release.

Van Pelt was thrown into the northbound lane where she was struck by another vehicle, Stocco said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both drivers remained at the scene, Stocco said. The pickup was driven by Jose Rios Simental, 55, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, and the second vehicle was being driven by James Cohen, 31, of Waretown, police said.

As of Tuesday morning, the crash was being investigated by Toms River Traffic Safety Officer Robert Westfall, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, and the Ocean County Sheriff's Office.
