TOMS RIVER -- A 45-year-old township man who police believe was killed in a hit-and-run on Christmas Day was walking to catch a bus to Lacey where he planned to spend the holiday with family.
The detail emerges as police continued to investigate Monday morning the death of Keith Elliott.
Toms River Police spokesman Officer Ralph Stocco said Elliott left his home on Messenger Street and was walking to the bus terminal on Highland Parkway when he was hit around 10:38 a.m. on Sunday.
Officers respond to the area of the bus terminal after police received reports of a man lying in the roadway.
Elliott was pronounced dead at the scene.
Stocco said the man had "numerous visible injuries consistent with a vehicle hit-and-run." Police scoured the area in search of physical or video evidence, Stocco said.
"Investigators are on the scene again today attempting to collect more evidence from surrounding businesses that were closed on Christmas Day," Stocco said in a press release issued on Monday.
He said police believe Elliott was walking to the bus terminal to catch a bus to Lacey Township where he was planning on spending the day with family.
The crash remains under investigation by the Toms River Police Department and the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.
