TOMS RIVER -- A Toms River man has been charged with trying to rob a local bank after handing a teller a threatening note, authorities announced on Wednesday.

Paul E. Hansen, 36, was charged two days after the Dec. 20 attempted robbery of the TD Bank on Fischer Boulevard, said Ralph Stocco, spokesman for the Toms River Police Department. He was arrested a day after authorities released still photographs from surveillance video of the incident, Stocco said.

Hansen is accused of going into the bank branch and handing the teller a note that demanded money and said, "If you don't follow these instructions then I will shoot you and everyone else in the bank," Stocco said.

Stocco said police began receiving leads shortly after the photos were released and Toms River Detective Randy Petrick took him into custody.

Hansen is being held in the Ocean County Jail in Toms River in lieu of $100,000 bail.
