Police responded to a residence on Wild Oaks Drive at around 11:35 a.m. after receiving a call from a concerned family member.

LITTLE EGG HARBOR -- Authorities on Wednesday identified an armed man who was shot and killed by police Tuesday morning.

Francis D. Hartnett, 47, was brandishing a knife and advancing towards police when he was fatally shot by multiple officers, said Al Della Fave, a spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.

On Wednesday, Della Fave released additional information about the moments before the shooting.

Police responded to a residence on Wild Oaks Drive at around 11:35 a.m. after receiving a call from a concerned family member about a "possibly suicidal" man, Della Fave said.

The family member reported that Hartnett had attempted to harm himself, Della Fave said.

When authorities arrived, no one inside the apartment responded to them, Della Fave said. He said the officers went inside the home, announced their presence, and immediately encountered Hartnett, who had a knife in his hand.

As he started to advance towards them, the officers told Hartnett to drop his knife, Della Fave said. Della Fave could not comment on the manner in which Hartnett advanced at the officers, citing the ongoing investigation.

Multiple officers discharged their service weapons, striking Hartnett multiple times, Della Fave said.

Hartnett was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation by authorities found that Hartnett suffered from depression and had previously attempted suicide multiple times, Della Fave said.
