The summonses included four DWI arrests, three drug-related offenses and six for disorderly persons, fights and aggravated assaults, authorities said.

Nearly 100 summonses, including four for DWI, were issued in Ocean County on the day of its annual St. Patrick's Day parade in Seaside Heights, authorities announced Tuesday.

The heightened traffic enforcement led to more than 277 traffic stops and 94 summonses issued by police on stretches of routes 35 and 37, Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph Coronato said.

There were four DWI arrests, three drug-related offenses and six summonses issued for disorderly persons, fights and aggravated assaults, according to a report provided by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office. Three people were arrested on warrants, the report showed.

The Ocean County St. Patrick's Day Parade was held March 11 in Seaside Heights. The heightened enforcement included Route 35 from Seaside Park to Point Pleasant Beach and Route 37 from Seaside Heights to Manchester. Eleven local police departments, county and state authorities participated in the initiative.

"This initiative was a pro-active effort to prevent accidents and address traffic violations following the Seaside Heights St. Patrick's Day parade on the identified detail highways," a statement issued by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said.

The added police presence added up to 223 hours of overtime, according to the report. Al Della Fave, a spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, said the overtime was paid for by a grant from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety.

"They'll do that periodically on holiday weekends," he said. "They'll provide grants in order to conduct DWI checkpoints, supplemental patrols and roving patrols."

Adding to the angst of local and state authorities this year was the threat of traffic jams due to construction on the Route 37/Thomas A. Mathis Bridge carrying vehicles into Seaside Heights from Toms River.

Revelers flocking to the parade were urged to give themselves extra time and to avoid taking the bridge if possible.

Despite the wind and below-freezing temperatures, thousands of parade attendees, bundled in heavy jackets and scarfs, lined the Boulevard in Seaside Heights for the event's 33rd year.
