Former Barnegat High School star Jason Groome, the No. 1 selection of the Boston Red Sox in the 2016 MLB Draft, was assigned to the Class A Greenville (S.C.) Drive of the South Atlantic League.
Former Gloucester Catholic ace Mike Shawaryn, also chosen in the 2016 draft, was also assigned to Greenville by the Red Sox.
Greenville will be managed by former Rutgers University star and Middletown South graduate Darren Fenster.
Groome, a left-hander with a fastball in the mid-90s, was named the No. 2 left-handed pitching prospect in baseball by MLB.com. He is considered the No. 2 prospect in the Boston system.
Groome, compared to Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw and considered the best, young, lefty in the Boston system since Jon Lester, was taken with the No. 12 pick by the Red Sox last June.
Groome and Shawaryn are members of a 13-man pitching staff in Greenville.
Greenville opens its season Thursday, at home, against the Delmarva Shorebirds. Greenville will play at the Lakewood BlueClaws on May 10, 11, 12.
