The Breeders Association of America store in Brick was placed under quarantine until April 28

BRICK -- Puppy sales at an Ocean County pet shop have been halted by the department of health after an investigation determined a dog sold by the store died from the highly-contagious parvovirus, authorities said Friday.

The Breeders Association of America store in Brick was placed under quarantine on Thursday, Ocean County Health Department spokeswoman Leslie Terjesen.

The dog, Cooper, was not symptomatic at the time it was sold and it remains unclear when the dog contracted parvovirus, but the quarantine was ordered out of an abundance of caution, Terjesen said.

The shop is prohibited from selling dogs or bringing in new puppies until April 28.

Terjesen said health inspectors made unannounced visits to the shop on Tuesday and Wednesday after receiving a complaint about a dog that was ill.

Several news outlets have reported the story of Anne Reeves, who along with her 20-year-old daughter, purchased a husky-Pomeranian mix named Cooper from Breeders Association of America that reportedly died after contracting parvo. The Reeves purchased the puppy for $2,500, and a week later Cooper died.

Other pet owners have come forward to News 12 New Jersey, with staggering veterinarian bills, claiming they purchased sick dogs from the Brick Township pet store.
