Odor of marijuana leads cops to 78 bags of heroin, authorities say

Two Barnegat men parked in the lot of a Manchester motel were arrested, police said

MANCHESTER -- Two Shore men have been charged with having large quantities of heroin after police in Manchester detected the odor of marijuana coming from their car, authorities said Saturday.

Louis Stokes and Anthony Singletary, both 20 and from Barnegat, were charged Thursday with several drug possession offenses stemming from their arrests outside a motel in Manchester, said police Chief Lisa Parker.

Parker said members of the department's Narcotics Enforcement Team spotted a suspicious car with two men inside parked in the lot of the Route 37 motel shortly before 10 p.m. The officers immediately noticed the smell of burning marijuana as they approached the car, she said, adding they noticed some marijuana inside the car.

When officers asked Stokes, who was in the passenger seat, to get out of the car, he tried to run from the area but was immediately apprehended and arrested after a brief struggle, she said. Police later found on him of 33 bags of heroin and 2 grams of cocaine, Parker said.

Singletary, the driver, was also arrested and later found to have 45 bags of heroin on him, she said.

Police confiscated the car and more than $400 in cash, Parker said. ation.

Singletary was charged with possession and possession with intent to distribute heroin, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and concealment of evidence.  He was released on summons, Parker said.

Stokes was charged with possession and possession with intent to distribute heroin, possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, concealment of evidence, hindering apprehension, and resisting Arrest.

He was taken to the Ocean County Jail in Toms River on the Manchester charges as well as on an outstanding warrant from Barnegat and one from the New Jersey State Juvenile Parole program, Parker said.

Also assisting in the investigation were members of the Manchester Township Police Department's Patrol Bureau and K-9 Unit, she said.
