The woman was reported missing after she went swimming with a friend.
POINT PLEASANT BEACH -- Authorities on Sunday continued a search for a swimmer who was reported missing in the early morning hours.
Point Pleasant Beach police notified the United States Coast Guard at 2:27 a.m. that a 24-year-old woman went missing after she went swimming with a friend off the beach in Point Pleasant, said David Micallef, a spokesman for the U.S. Coast Guard's Mid-Atlantic station.
The woman's identity was not released.
Micallef said the Coast Guard conducted a search by boat and air. The search remained ongoing as of late Sunday evening.
No additional information on the incident was available.
The search is being led by the Coast Guard with assistance from the Point Pleasant Beach police department. The New Jersey State Police Marine Unit, Point Pleasant Beach Fire Company and first aid squads from Bay Head and Mantoloking, and dive teams from Brick, Brielle and Point Pleasant Beach also assisted in the search.
Authorities asked anyone with information to contact the Coast Guard at 215-271-4940.
The National Weather Service had issued a warning for "dangerous and potentially life-threatening" rip currents along the Jersey Shore. Many beaches were closed to swimming and wave heights were expected to reach up to 6 feet on Sunday.
