Surfers catch waves produced by Hurricane Gert.

Surfers across the state scrambled to catch the larger than normal waves generated by Hurricane Gert Wednesday.

Gert, which is not a threat to New Jersey, was hundreds of miles off the coast Wednesday afternoon, but still produced large waves and dangerous rip currents up and down the Jersey Shore. Many towns issued red flags, warning swimmers of the dangers.

Several towns only allowed beachgoers to enter the water no higher than knee deep, while others banned swimming completely.

Some towns had no restrictions, such as North Wildwood.
