Over the next few months, NJ.com photographer Alex Remnick will be photographing some of the Shore's best-known locations off-peak

OCEAN--Earlier this week, my colleague Pete Genovese listed Jersey Shore Winters as the #8 most underrated thing about New Jersey -- an opinion he and I happen to share. There is something so serene and private about the beaches when no one is around. Sure, it's cold, and some restaurants are closed, but there's nothing quite like strolling an empty boardwalk in a winter coat with the light January breeze at your face.

I decided to pay tribute in the best way I know how. Over the next few months, I'll be photographing some of the Shore's best-known locations in its slow season, in a series called "Jersey Shore off-season."

My first stop, Seaside Heights, has a mixed rep. Some love it for its carnival atmosphere, while others can't get over the fact that it's where Snooki and The Situation rose to fame. Personally, I love it. As a native New Yorker, it reminds me  of Coney Island, while still having an edge unlike anywhere else along the Shore.
