TOMS RIVER -- An elderly couple was hospitalized Tuesday morning after the vehicle they were in was t-boned at an intersection.
Phyllis Scardena, 76, of Toms River, was driving in a 2004 Oldsmobile with her 87-year-old husband, whom police did not identify, at 11:30 a.m. when she ran a red light at the intersection of Vermont Avenue and Cox Cro Road, Officer Ralph Stocco said.
He said Scardena was attempting to make a left turn onto Cox Cro Road when she was struck in the middle of the passenger's side by a 2008 Dodge, driven by Nancy Bartley, 53, of Toms River. Bartley had a green light, Stocco said.
Scardena's Oldsmobile spun around, hit the curb and then struck a snow bank, Stocco said. The impact forced the vehicle to overturn and land on the passenger's side on the front yard of a residence on Cox Cro Road.
Scardena and her husband had to be removed from the vehicle with the assistance of the Pleasant Plains Fire Department.
Scardena was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where she was treated for multiple injuries but is in good condition, Stocco said. Her husband, who wasn't wearing a seatbelt, was flown to the same hospital and is listed in stable condition.
Bartley suffered minor injuries in the crash, Stocco said.
Scardena was issued a ticket for failure to observe a traffic signal.
Emergency Medical Services units from Toms River and Silverton assisted at the scene.
