The man briefly fled from police after being shot by jumping into a river.

TOMS RIVER - An Ocean County man was shot late Thursday night after he allegedly pulled a gun on police officers.

Shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Thursday night, officers on patrol approached a suspicious vehicle near the corner of Cedar and Haines drives in Toms River, Toms River Police Department spokesman Ralph Stocco said in a release Friday morning.

The officer made contact with a 29-year-old Toms River man, whose name was not released.

"During the interaction the man suddenly exited his vehicle and pulled a gun on the officers," Stocco said in the release.

The man received at least one gunshot wound prior to fleeing into the Toms River by jumping over a cement bulkhead at end of a dead-end street, police said.

The New Jersey State Police's Aviation Unit, the Ocean County Sheriff's Department and the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office assisted the Toms River Police Department with its search of the suspect.

The man was located approximately an hour later by Tactical Response Officers and was immediately given medical treatment, Stocco said.

Toms River EMS transported him to an undisclosed nearby medical facility for treatment.

No officers were injured during the incident, Stocco said.

The investigation will be led by the Ocean County Prosecutors Office, said Stocco, who directed all further inquires through that office.

No other details on the shooting were released as of 7 a.m. Friday.
