MANCHESTER -- A man needed stitches on both arms Wednesday after being attacked by an "aggressive" animal, which police say may have been a coyote.
The 53-year-old told police he came across "a large brown aggressive dog" while walking his German Shepherd in the woods off Johnson Avenue at about 5 p.m. The man said the animal attacked him without provocation, biting both of his arms, according to a police statement.
Police searched the neighborhood, but couldn't find the animal or any neighbors who had seen a similar animal.
However, residents have recently reported hearing what they thought were coyotes howling.
The incident is being investigated by police, along with local animal control and representatives from the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife.
Although, it wasn't a confirmed coyote attack, officials have issued a public service announcement with safety tips in response.
The man was treated at the Ocean Medical Center in Brick and released.
